Cast Iron On-Site Welding
JT Metalworks Ltd was called to a Victorian property in central London to carry out urgent on-site cast iron welding repairs to a damaged balustrade. The existing cast iron railing had deteriorated over time, creating a safety hazard and restricting access to the property’s main entrance. Due to the age of the building and the heritage materials involved, the client required a mobile welder with proven experience in cast iron welding, specialist fabrication, and structural repairs carried out directly on site.
Our team arrived promptly and completed a full assessment of the balustrade, identifying critical fractures caused by long-term exposure and impact stress. To ensure a precise and durable repair, the mobile welding process included controlled preheating of the material using a Thermomelt heat crayon to verify the correct temperature prior to welding. This temperature-controlled approach prevents thermal shock and ensures a secure fusion of the original cast iron structure.
The damaged sections were expertly welded using Ni-CI E405 cast iron electrodes, a specialist welding rod designed for repairing grey and ductile cast iron components. Once the welding bead was completed, the balustrade was cooled down gradually to prevent cracking and to stabilise the new weld. This careful process ensures a long-lasting repair that maintains structural integrity and preserves the character of the original Victorian design.
The result is a fully restored cast iron balustrade that offers safe, reliable access while retaining the property’s architectural heritage.
