Galvanised Lightwell Grilles with Access Hatch and Ladder | London
This project involved the design and installation of a complete safety and access solution for a residential lightwell. We fabricated a heavy-duty galvanised steel grille featuring an integrated access hatch and a custom-made internal ladder, providing a secure but functional way to enter and exit the lower level.
Technical Project Details
Lightwell covers must be incredibly strong to support foot traffic while allowing natural light and ventilation into basement rooms. For this installation, we focused on three key areas:
- Security and Safety: The steel grille provides a robust barrier against falls and unauthorized access. We designed the bar spacing to be safe for pedestrians while maintaining maximum light flow to the windows below.
- Integrated Access Hatch: To allow for maintenance and emergency egress, we built a flush-fitting hatch into the grille. The hinges and locking mechanisms are designed to be low-profile to prevent trip hazards.
- Custom Access Ladder: We fabricated a bespoke steel ladder specifically for the dimensions of this lightwell. It was securely bolted to the masonry to ensure a stable climb, providing a permanent and safe access route.
Why Use Galvanised Steel for Lightwells?
Because lightwells are constantly exposed to rain and damp conditions, material choice is everything. We used hot-dip galvanised steel for this entire build for several reasons:
- Rust Prevention: Galvanising creates a protective zinc coating that prevents corrosion, even in the dampest London basements.
- Low Maintenance: Unlike painted steel, a galvanised finish won't chip or peel, meaning it will look great and remain structurally sound for decades without repainting.
